M-1’s life has always been a battle. He grew up poor on the streets of New Orleans, did jail time on a weapons charge where he first began putting his freestyles to paper, and lost family members and friends during the tragic events of Hurricane Katrina. He also “battled” his freestyle opponents, ‘murdering’ the competition so often that the name stuck. After each freestyle competition, the talk was always that “Murder won”, and over time the nickname evolved to “Murda-1.”
Born and raised in New Orleans’ 9th Ward, Christopher Michael Gibson, a.k.a. M-1, has seen his share of trouble, but he has come through it all a survivor. In 1995 he relocated to Rochester, NY, never anticipating that a city in the North would prove the launch pad for the “Heart of the South.” Still reeling from tragedy, M-1 was signed to Original Records, where he poured his heart into creating his debut album for the newly formed label.
Featuring production from high-level producers, powerful lyricism, and the scorching new single “Fine As Mine”, M-1 is one of rap’s freshest new voices. The year 2010 will see the release of his debut album, an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, and performances throughout the country. As his career begins to explode, M-1 is proof that you can’t keep a good man down.
